Current Drinking Water Sources – Know Your Water

The Northwest Public Water System is in the Northwest Regional Utility Service Area of Polk County. The Utility produces 15.7 million gallons of drinking water every day. They also collect and treats 7 million gallons of wastewater each day.

The Northwest Public Water System extracts water from seven wells drilled into the Floridan Aquifer.

The Floridan Aquifer contains some of the cleanest water in Florida. This vast subterranean reservoir is fed primarily by rainwater that is filtered through hundreds of feet of rock and sand in a natural filtering process. The groundwater is treated at six different water treatment facilities. Treatment at the water treatment facilities consists of:

  • Chlorine – Is added for disinfection
  • Poly-Orthophosphate – Is added for sequestering iron

When Are My Watering Days

Lawn watering is limited to twice per week schedule for potable drinking water and other water resources, regardless of the water source such as wells, surface water, etc. Watering times are midnight to 10 am or 4 pm to midnight. Hand watering or micro irrigation of your landscape is allowed but the watering of your lawn is not allowed. Locations without an address are included in the restriction.

When it is your day to water/feed your lawn and plants, be sure to give them what their roots can absorb. Any extra fertilizer that they don’t absorb ends up in the Floridan Aquifer or other bodies of water.

Boil Water Notices

You may receive a door hanger or other form of written notice on your front door, or hear a news story on the radio, TV, or online that a precautionary boil water notice has been issued for your neighborhood. Details about the event will be listed on the notice left at your door. A contact number is also included for additional information if needed.

The Polk County Health Department requires a precautionary notice after pressure in the lines drops below a certain level. This is typically caused by a water main break, system maintenance, or problems at the water plant such as a loss of disinfection. By comparison, a mandatory notice is rare and far more serious, and its provisions should be strictly followed.
