Current Drinking Water Sources – Know Your Water

Tampa Bay Water is the only water utility in the US that uses a distinct blend of three water sources to deliver affordable, drinking water to the 2.5 million businesses and residents it serves.

Groundwater

Tampa Bay Water extracts groundwater that comes from the Floridan Aquifer, an underground layer of limestone that stores billions of gallons of water. The Floridan Aquifer is fed from water that has seeped down through the soil.

Tampa Bay Water is permitted to extract an annual average of 120 million gallons per day.

Surface Water

Surface water, or river water, was the first drinking water alternative to be added to the Hillsborough County’s wholesale water supply. Since 2002, surface water has been treated at Tampa Bay Water’s state-of-the-art surface water treatment plant. This plant is the hub of their Enhanced Surface Water System, which is designed to take advantage of the 47-50 inches of rain that typically falls in Hillsborough County, FL

When available, water is extracted from the Alafia River, Hillsborough River and the Tampa Bypass Canal. Some of the water is treated immediately and the surplus water is stored in the 15.5 billion gallons C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir to supply the water treatment plant during dry times.

Seawater

The Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination facility is a water supply that provides 25 million gallons of water per day to Hillsborough County, FL.

Extracted seawater goes into the plant and undergoes a rigorous pretreatment process then freshwater is produced using reverse osmosis. The end product is high-quality drinking water that supplies up to 10 percent of Hillsborough County, FL needs.

When Are My Watering Days

Residents and businesses in unincorporated Hillsborough County may water their landscapes two times per week. With no special dry season restrictions in place, the watering days are the same as usual:

  • Mondays and Thursdays – for addresses ending in 0, 1, 2, or 3
  • Tuesdays and Fridays – for those ending in 4, 5, or 6
  • Wednesdays and Saturdays – for addresses ending in 7, 8, or 9

Except for hand watering and low volume irrigation, landscape watering must take place before 8 am or after 6 pm on allowable days.

When fertilizing your landscapes, be sure to only feed your plants what they can actually absorb. The access nutrients will either seep down the soil and make its way to the Floridan Aquifer or runoff into another body of water.

Boil Water Notices

When you receive a notice on your front door, or you hear a story on the news on the radio, TV, or online that a boil water notice has been issued for your Hillsborough County neighborhood. What do you do? That depends on the type of notice you got.

The Hillsborough County Health Department requires a precautionary notice after the pressure in the lines drops below a certain level. This is usually caused by a water main break, system maintenance, or a problem at the water plant such as a loss of disinfection. By comparison, mandatory notices are much rarer and far more serious, and its provisions should be strictly followed.
