There are many issues with our water, especially here in Florida where the water quality standards are even lower than most other states in the nation. From harmful disinfectant techniques to pipes that turn our water hazardous, we are not safe in trusting that the contaminated water entering our homes is actually safe for our bodies. There are many studies and articles that support the idea that there need to be more strict rules regarding our water quality. We need to take our health into our own hands and be more proactive in making sure we have clean and safe water in our homes.
Recent studies have revealed that trace levels of copper found in drinking water may lead to increase risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Scientifically speaking the combination of copper and cholesterol prevents the removal of protein which then later produces the brain clogs associated with the disease. A study was done by the National Academy of Science using two groups of rabbits, one of which received tap water with trace levels of copper and the other received distilled water. The scientists found that the rabbits drinking the distilled water had far less precursors than the group that did not receive clean water.
Many researchers, scientists, and doctors have realized the dangers that drinking water contaminants have on the human body due to their tendency to build up in body tissue and accumulate over time. The EPA acknowledged only 91 contaminants out of 60,000 are regulated and that not a single chemical has been added since 2000. It has been determined that the pollutants found in drinking water are associated to cancer and other diseases and might not be as relevant if there were more extensive chemical assessments done.
The addition of chlorine to municipal water supplies is a common form of water treatment. The novel use of chloramine, which is the combination of chlorine and ammonia, causes disinfectant byproducts when in contact with organic matter. These byproducts are thousands of times more toxic than chlorine and cause various health issues, extracts lead from your pipes, and damages your property due to its corrosive nature.
